Implementing Indigenous Peoples Rights, Key to Accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals

  • 8:00 am - 9:30 am

ABOUT EVENT

Indigenous Peoples in Cambodia, Tanzania, Peru, and Guyana are using the Indigenous Navigator to monitor their rights and development. The national and community-based data from data gathering reinforces Indigenous Peoples’ struggle for recognition and protection of their rights, as well as full and effective participation in decision-making processes related to development.

The side event will focus on the situation of Indigenous Peoples halfway through the implementation of the SDGs through the data gathered by Indigenous Peoples using the Indigenous Navigator. The event will also provide a global overview on the SDG implementation from the perspectives of Indigenous Peoples and will highlight the situation of Indigenous Peoples in Cambodia, Guyana, and Tanzania whose governments are also reporting their VNR this year.

Since 2017, Indigenous Peoples from Peru have been using the Indigenous Navigator and this side event will also hear from local Indigenous leaders on their experiences in advocating for the respect and implementation of their rights and the critical role of the Indigenous Navigator in monitoring the rights of Indigenous Peoples and enhancing Indigenous Peoples’ opportunity to collect data on their situation.

The side event is in person that aims to highlight the contributions, challenges, lessons learned, and recommendations of Indigenous Peoples in the achievement of sustainable development that ‘leaves no one behind’.
