Science and indigenous knowledge

Joan Carling, Co-convener, Indigenous Peoples Major Group for the SDGs stresses the importance of inclusion of indigenous peoples in decision making for sustainable landscapes. Interview filmed at the 2017 GLF Bonn. Published on Feb 26, 2018.

"We need to understand that historically and up to this day sustainable landscape has always been the way indigenous peoples are managing our resources and that has led us to develop our traditional knowledge or customary knowledge. And we believe that this is equal to scientific knowledge and we need both knowledge for landscape management particularly now in the context of addressing climate change and also achieving sustainable development. And we fully agree when we talk of landscape people has to be at the center and when we’re talking of people being at the center the enabling environment for that is for indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities practicing sustainable landscape should have their rights recognized." - Joan (Excerpts)
