What is Land Rights Now? 

Land Rights Now is an international campaign to secure indigenous peoples' and community land rights. Safeguarding collective land rights is at the heart of the building a just and equitable world; they are key to protecting the planet and achieving sustainable development. Land Rights Now mobilizes and engages the public nationally and globally to exercise pressure on governments to adopt, implement and enforce laws that safeguard indigenous and community land rights. More than 800 organizations worldwide have endorsed the campaign and its policy asks.

On 25 September 2015, the UN Member States adopted 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets that will guide global development efforts on poverty eradication, food security, environmental sustainability and the rule of law from now till 2030.

It is increasingly recognized that human rights are essential to achieve sustainable development. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) served as a proxy for certain economic and social rights but ignored other important human rights linkages. By contrast, human rights principles and standards are now strongly reflected in an ambitious new global development framework, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Twelfth International Conference of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC) took place in Mérida, Yucatàn, Mexico, from 8 to 10 October 2015. It was hosted by the National Human Rights Commission of Mexico (CNDH) and organised in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the ICC. The focus of the Conference was “The Sustainable Development Goals: What Role for National Human Rights Institutions?”

In step with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) and its Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) adopted by Heads of State and Government at the United Nations Summit in September 2015 (A/RES/70/1), this note aims to provide general guidance and elements of a common understanding on a Human Rights-Based Approach to Data (HRBAD), with a focus on issues of data collection and disaggregation.

The 2030 Agenda is explicitly grounded in international human rights treaties. The commitment to human rights is reflected in the general principle of non-discrimination and the aim to “leave no one behind”. Human rights are further reflected throughout the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets. Concretely, 156 of the 169 targets have substantial linkages to human rights and labour standards. The SDGs and human rights are thereby tied together in a mutually reinforcing way. Human rights offer guidance for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, while the SDGs can contribute substantially to the realization of human rights.
