UN experts seeking requests under new mandate

“The United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples has published on its website principles and procedures of submitting country engagement requests, including for technical assistance and facilitation of dialogue. These elements became the Expert Mechanism's new functions as part of its mandate reform, realized by the UN Human Rights Council in September 2016. In July 2017, at their 10th session EMRIP experts approved the working methods that will make the new mandate instrumental.

The press release of the Expert Mechanism states that purposes of its country engagement may include  analysis of domestic legislation of policies and provision of independent advice and recommendations to the requester(s); facilitation of dialogue between requester(s) and other stakeholders; independent observation of and advice on the implementation of laws and policies to implement the Declaration; capacity-building for requester(s) and other stakeholders; awareness-raising.

Experts invite States, indigenous peoples and their organizations engage with them by directing requests to the Secretariat:

Secretariat of the Expert Mechanism on the rights of Indigenous Peoples,

Indigenous Peoples and Minorities Section,

Rule of Law, Equality and Non-Discrimination Branch

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights

United Nations Office at Geneva
